Northern New Jersey is one of the most diverse regions in the country. Here is why cultural awareness is not optional in home care it is essential.

Bergen County and the surrounding communities of Northern New Jersey are home to a remarkable mix of cultures, languages, and traditions. Haitian families, Caribbean families, West African families, South American families, South Asian families, Korean families the list goes on. And for older adults in these communities, the home is often where cultural identity is most deeply rooted.

Food is cultural. Language is cultural. How family is expected to behave around elders is cultural. How physical space and personal boundaries are understood is cultural. What kinds of touch and interaction feel appropriate is cultural.

A home care aide who does not understand or respect these dimensions of a client’s life will struggle no matter how technically competent they are. An aide who does understand them will feel, to the family, like someone who actually belongs in their home.

How Elm approaches cultural matching: When we meet with a new family, we ask questions. Not just about medical history and care needs, but about background, language, food preferences, family structure, and what makes their loved one feel most at ease. Louis trains every aide to approach cultural difference with curiosity and respect rather than assumptions.

In practice, this means we often match Caribbean clients with Caribbean aides when possible. We match Spanish-speaking clients with Spanish-speaking aides. We ask about dietary restrictions that are rooted in religion or culture not just medical need. And we make adjustments based on feedback without making families feel like they are asking for something unreasonable.

This is not a special service. It is how home care should always work.
